"Mr President, this resolution, among other things, outlines the situation in Bahrain where human rights activists are facing ongoing systematic targeting, harassment and detention. In this context it asks, and so do I, for the unconditional release of all prisoners of conscience: doctors, paramedics, journalists, political activists, human rights defenders and peaceful protestors. In particular I want to mention two prisoners: Nabeel Rajab, whom I met, and Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, whose family I met when in Bahrain. At that time he was in prison.
Mr Tannock asked if we really need a resolution on Bahrain. Well, I want to raise the issue of the misuse of CS gas in Bahrain. According to reports I have received, it has killed upwards of 50 people, which in reality means it is weaponised, and when a toxic chemical is used in excess and results in multiple deaths it constitutes a chemical weapon, according to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. This is of particular relevance during the current debate on Syria, but for some reason it seems to have been ignored. In my opinion, there should immediately be a challenge inspection of Bahrain under the Chemical Weapons Convention Protocols."@en1
