"I supported this report because I believe in the potential of the cultural and creative sectors to stimulate job creation and economic growth in the EU. The cultural and creative sectors (architecture, artistic crafts, cultural heritage, design, festivals, film and television, music, performing and visual arts, archives and libraries, publishing and radio) account for 3-4 % of the EUʼs GDP and employ 7-8 million people. This report aims to look at how to improve the competitiveness and export potential of these sectors, and to maximise their spillover benefits for ICT and innovation. It envisages a series of policy initiatives and the promotion of a modern regulatory environment, as well as better coordination of policies in areas such as culture, education, industry, economic affairs, tourism, urban and regional development, and territorial planning. Ireland is a county with a rich cultural and creative heritage and has developed a substantial and ever growing industry in the cultural and creative sectors. I feel it is of paramount importance that Parliament support these sectors in a substantial manner to create jobs and to enhance the cultural diversity of the EU."@en1
