"Mr President, you and I have in common that we have spent part of our lives under a military regime. I do not presume to speak for you, but it taught me that there is no such thing as a good coup. There are only bad coups and worse coups. In 1952 army officers seized power in Egypt and they have wielded it ever since and like all military juntas they run affairs around their own convenience, suiting themselves for want of any opposition. The Western world generally – I do not lay any particular blame at the door of the European Union here – the Western world made a fatal mistake in the hours when the coup was threatened but had not yet been delivered by failing to intervene then, giving a green light to the repression and tyranny that has happened since. If we were trying to create Islamic fundamentalism, this is exactly how we would go about it: by vindicating the most paranoid world view of the Jihadists. It is a shame that countries rooted in democracy have behaved in this fashion. Egypt deserves better."@en1
