"Mr President, I am in favour of this resolution. Although the principle of equal pay for equal work has been enshrined as a fundamental EU principle for more than 50 years, it is clear that not enough has been done to address the issue fully. The fact of the gender pay gap for Ireland sitting at 14% and that for the whole of the EU at 16% demonstrates that much remains to be done to ensure that women have access to well-paid quality employment. As the impact of the crisis and the current so-called austerity measures continues to be felt by vulnerable and disadvantaged groups such as women, and with the effects of the pay gap extending to retirement age, it is more important than ever that we close this discriminatory gap. It would be remiss of me not to mention a delegation that was here yesterday from the Freedom Drivers, who attended this Parliament and asked that their needs be met and their voice be heard – a voice of independent people seeking independent living."@en1
