"Mr President, at times when we seek a solution to some of these environmental problems we find ourselves looking at the one-size-fits-all solution from EU level rather than looking at solutions closer to home. There should actually be no political disagreement on the need for more micro-generation. As one of my colleagues said earlier, it has been estimated in the UK that 30% of energy could come from micro-generation. Perhaps, however, we can also learn a lesson from the past. Over the years, we have seen the demise of many of the old windmills and watermills that used to be in our towns. Maybe we could see more riverside properties starting to generate more of their own energy, and work on harnessing tidal energy as well. At the same time we see more and more street furniture being powered by solar energy. If we can encourage that, perhaps the solution to our problems is closer to home."@en1
