"Mr President, it is usual for the Committee on Petitions to report on the activities of the European Ombudsman and we have heard that there is some good work carried out on behalf of the citizens of many EU Member States who have a complaint to bring or an example of some aspect of maladministration.
However, as my colleague, Dan Hannan, asked earlier on, where is the awareness? I think that one of the things we have to ask is that, even though there are staff doing some very good work, one of the questions that we repeatedly refuse to answer or get an answer to is whether that EUR 9.5 million budget actually represents good value for money. Of course they do good work, but are they doing it in a cost-effective way? Until we are able to answer that question, as with so many other institutions here at the EU level and until we have proper accountability in that way, we have to reserve judgement."@en1
