"Mr President, this report highlights the untapped potential for growth and jobs by fully implementing the Services Directive and, given that the services sector accounts for more than 65% of EU GDP, we can certainly see the real potential here. Now, coming from a country that has a huge export services sector compared to our size, I consider it is very important that there are no unnecessary restrictions that hamper service provision, and we must do all we can to prevent gold-plating by Member States. We need a coherent application of rules. Right now, for example, we have a situation where one of our French colleagues is trying to muddy the waters in regard to the agreed abolition of milk quotas by 2015. He is trying to use market measures to protect producers in certain countries. While this is not directly related to the provision of services, it is the same mindset that influences the thinking of protectionism, not trade, and the EU cannot function with this mindset."@en1
