"Unemployment in the EU recently reached the 26 million mark, with youth unemployment standing at 5 560 million in the EU-28. Despite the gravity of the downward spiralling situation, assurances that jobs will be provided for all, regardless of the productivity necessary to deliver them, borders on negligence. It is not governments which create jobs or drive growth, although this report certainly seems to suggest that, but businesses and entrepreneurs. In a concept quite so divorced from reality it is unsurprising then that the very numbers themselves do not adhere to realism. The ‘Youth Guarantee’ scheme supported by this report, assuring every young European of a job, has pledged EUR 8 billion to the worst hit countries over the next two years. Yet with one in five not working, training or in education in Spain and Italy and one in four in Greece, it is the equivalent of only EUR 850 a year for every young European outside of work or education in those countries. It is a bill that we will leave future generations to pay. Instead of opening markets or cutting taxation, completing the single market or fostering foreign direct investment through free trade agreements, we call for more stifling red tape and regulations. When will it end?"@en1
