"This report on the implementation of the EU Youth Strategy has a well-intended goal to provide young people with more and better opportunities. I agree with many of the goals in this report as it is setting a framework for international cooperation on youth issues. It makes a positive contribution to the fight against high rates of youth unemployment across Europe. But unfortunately this report also includes a section called ‘European citizenship’. As a Group we absolutely cannot support Paragraph 63 which calls on the Commission to ‘develop more initiatives to strengthen EU integration and urges the Member States to incorporate European studies courses into education curricula’. Education is a competence of the Member States and should always be so. It is disappointing that the report criticises Member States for spending cuts in education. Member States should not be criticised for taking these unfortunate, but needed, measures following the crisis. The EU needs to become more flexible to allow for the growth we need to give our young people opportunities. Unfortunately, I had to vote against this report."@en1
