"Madam President, as Chair of the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection, I would like to thank Constance Le Grip and all the shadow team who worked with us, and in particular the staff of the committee – who will perhaps not all be listening this evening – because an enormous amount of work was needed to reach an agreement on this proposal. We should also thank the Irish Presidency in their absence: if it were not for their great work, particularly with the mountain of issues we had to deal with on delegated and implementing acts, we would not have made progress. As Ms Gebhardt pointed out in one instance – and there were several others – these are not just technical issues, they are important political issues as well. I want to thank you, Commissioner, and your team led by Miroslaw Zielinski, for working with us. I think you paid us a tribute by saying that you agreed we have ended up with a better directive than we had when we started. However, this is only the beginning. We have just had a debate on the Services Directive, which is an issue we have been following since 2006 when Ms Gebhardt and I worked on it. On customs, from now on, we have to keep the implementation of the new Customs Code, and of what we put in this new directive, firmly in the political domain and in the eye of this Parliament. We have to keep up the pressure on Member States to invest and to implement these instruments. As many of you have said, this is crucially important for the operation of the single market, and it is also really important for consumers and citizens. As Ms Muscardini eloquently pointed out, the issues around counterfeiting and product safety are now increasingly in the domain of customs, and the more we take away the administrative burden, the better citizens can be looked after. This is part of the overall mission of our committee. So thanks very much to everybody. I look forward to this proposal from the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection receiving comprehensive approval tomorrow."@en1
