"Mr President, in my constituency, Lough Neagh enjoys protected geographical indication (PGI) status. It is the largest commercial wild eel fishery in Europe and there is no other eel fishery which is similarly structured and managed. More than 300 families around Lough Neagh are dependent on the eel fishery. Lough Neagh Fishermen’s Cooperative has developed the most sustainable eel fishery in Europe: all involved recognise the importance of conserving eel stocks and apply additional regulations ensuring sustainable fishing practices. Over 40 years they have invested nearly GBP 5 million to purchase and restock glass eels. Recognising the importance of improving the EU eel stock recovery, leading eel experts in the Agriculture, Food and Bioscience Institute are currently researching the biological assessment of stocking. However, no proposal which impacts directly on individual businesses and communities should be introduced until an impact assessment, based on independent scientific advice, has been completed."@en1
