"Mr President, the Lough Neagh eel fishery in my constituency is both the largest commercial wild eel fishery in Europe and the most sustainable. It is run by a fishermen’s cooperative and provides a livelihood for over 300 families. The local people who depend on it have banded together to protect and preserve this vital resource. For this reason, over a 40-year period the fishing and stocking methods applied have won international acclaim, and since 1984 the cooperative has invested almost GBP 5 million on the purchasing and restocking of glass eels. The eels are also important as an export, and bring in earnings of around GBP 5 million a year. It is a source of pride that Lough Neagh eels now enjoy PGI status.
I completely support the ways of improving European eel stock recovery, but Northern Ireland is part of the solution and not part of the problem. I hope the Commissioner will take that on board. I would urge that no proposals be introduced until an impact assessment based on independent scientific advice has been completed and is understood by everyone. I have always supported the Commission’s move towards the improvement of reporting obligations on eel management and the move towards updating eel regulations. Countries must fulfil their responsibilities and draw up the relevant reports so that the Commission can make an independent and proper judgment on what is happening."@en1
