"Mr President, we have witnessed a collapse in European eel stocks of about 90%. This is not surprising as they are killed at virtually every stage of their life cycle.
First of all, the glass eels are fetching about the same per kilo as a kilo of gold. They are a much sought-after delicacy. The elvers find it almost impossible now to get into fresh water because of the building of offshore renewables in river mouths and estuaries as well as the traditional hydroelectric schemes and water pumping stations. The adult eels find it impossible to get back into the sea to make their return journey to the Sargasso Sea.
For that reason I am delighted to welcome what the Commissioner has said this evening, that she will take very tough action to produce measures that will protect the eel. I also welcome Isabella Lövin’s excellent report. Both of these are aiming to achieve similar objectives."@en1
