"A Uachtaráin, go raibh míle maith agat.
As author of an opinion on the EU Youth Strategy, I identified the fight against youth unemployment as a priority, given its devastating effects on communities through mass emigration and hopelessness leading to the risk of suicide, particularly among young people.
The International Labour Organisation states that for the EU Youth Guarantee to be effective, it needs EUR 21 billion. Therefore the current allocation of EUR 8 billion is obviously not enough. The concept of providing access to employment for young people through a Youth Guarantee Investment is contrary to the austerity agenda being implemented by many governments across Europe. If we sustain jobs for young people – and we want to do that – then the EU Youth Guarantee needs to be adequately funded, it needs to tackle youth unemployment and it needs to be part of the broader economic strategy of investment and growth and jobs."@en1
