"I monitored this report with interest, as my home country, like many others, has an active online gambling community, as well as a number of companies providing online gambling services. I supported the report, because the online gambling sector has existed in a sort of regulatory limbo for a number of years; therefore it is timely and appropriate that the EU institutions are engaging with this issue now. It is estimated that some seven million EU citizens access online gambling services, creating annual revenues of approximately EUR 13 billion. I commend the rapporteur for his work on this dossier, and for achieving a successful outcome. I was pleased that close attention was paid to subsidiarity, i.e. that EU Member States retain the right ‘to determine how the offer of online gambling services is to be organised and regulated at national level, and the right to enforce all measures they consider necessary against illegal gambling services, while observing the basic EU Treaty principlesʼ."@en1
