"Online gambling has been growing in popularity over the past decade and is an industry now worth over EUR 80 billion in the EU. In the UK it was recently reported that its online gambling industry had broken the GBP 2 billion mark. Whilst a legitimate past-time for many millions and a valuable source of job creation, I welcome the measures proposed in this report to curtail some its more negative aspects. Chief among these is the need to protect minors, and to introduce measures that prevent the industry from being used as a vehicle for money-laundering and other criminal activity. The report’s recommendation that Member States should encourage operators to carry a logo or trustmark is also of particular value. Allowing users to be able to quickly and easily identify whether or not a site is reliable and legitimate would not only offer greater protection but would also encourage a bottom-up rather than a top-down regulatory regime."@en1
