"I supported this report by MEP Buzek because, on the whole, I agree with the European Commission’s principle that ‘the Union needs an internal energy market that is competitive, integrated and fluid, providing a solid backbone for electricity and gas flowing where it is needed’. It is particularly vital that our strategic choices with regard to Europe’s energy mix keep the consumer at their core. The combination of the European economic crisis and the increasing price of energy has hit many EU citizens hard, and any decisions we make must reflect this fact. This is particularly pertinent for Ireland, an island nation which imports the vast majority of its energy needs. To that end, I applaud this report’s call for ‘greater participation on the part of consumers’ being facilitated by local cooperatives for renewable energy, which ‘will help consumers better understand and manage their energy consumption, and thereby become more flexible and responsive (from both a demand and a supply perspective), so that they can ‘strengthen access to renewables and generate the necessary financial investments’."@en1
