"Mr President, I welcome the ‘consumer first’ approach of this report. As previous speakers have said, the importance of the report cannot be overstated, in view of the fact that a mortgage is often the most important and longest financial commitment a family makes. Mortgages are essential for access to house ownership, and 70% of the population in the EU actually have mortgages and own their own houses, and they are also of great economic importance. In 2009, mortgage credit amounted to EUR 612 billion: that is 52.3% of EU GDP. The market grew, as we know, from 1998 to 2009 in almost all Member States though, due to the economic crisis, there has been a decline since 2008.
While I supported this report, I was unable, as an Irish MEP, to support Amendment 117 because I believe that the interinstitutional agreement of 2011 should be respected.
The aim of the proposed directive is to create a responsible, efficient, healthy and competitive pan-European mortgage market, and I believe it does this."@en1
