lpv:spoken text	"Mr President, coming from Ireland I am particularly aware of the painful consequences of irresponsible lending, not only for the lives of individuals and their families but also for our economy. This directive brings in a set of new EU-wide standards for responsible mortgage lending which curtail risky behaviour on the part of creditors and borrowers alike. Simple comparable information on loan conditions, a period of reflection prior to being bound to a mortgage, the ban on tying practices and the provisions on early repayments are only some of the provisions that will directly benefit our consumers. I am satisfied that our colleague’s work went beyond that and also addressed risk in terms of creditworthiness, variable-rate lending and arrears and foreclosure, with a view to preventing long-term indebtedness. The problems that stem from the property bubbles require a wide range of measures in the area of housing provision and financial regulation, and this is a key step. I would like to congratulate the rapporteur. Thank you indeed."@en1
