"A Uachtaráin, go raibh maith agat as ucht mo cheist a fhreagairt faoi phreab na súl This is a very important topic and it is extraordinary, as Commissioner Reding pointed out, that equal pay for equal work was enshrined in our laws in 1957 and yet here are we are, 57 years later, with a pay gap of 16.2% between male and female across the European Union. That simply is not fair and we must ensure that it is stopped. This issue has nothing to do with feminism: it has to do with fairness; it has to do with equality. It is also unacceptable that some Member States have greater equality than others, and this matter must be brought to the attention of those that are negligent, so as to ensure that it is corrected. The economic recession is likely to be used to prolong this inequality, and that is something we must avoid. I also want to make the point that in some respects there is double discrimination, because society demands that women actually spend more, in the workplace and on social occasions, than men do – because of clothes, etc. That is also a factor."@en1
