"Mr President, this report shows the push towards state building at EU level, while EU actions are hollowing out democracy at Member State level by restricting the political choices available to parliaments and governments, particularly in the social and economic field. The Irish Government’s refusal to fight to retain Ireland’s current number of seats was a disgrace and showed contempt for the Irish people’s right to fair representation in the EU. Now there are serious practical difficulties in Ireland with regard to the European elections, due to the fact that constituency boundaries need to be redrawn. The lack of clarity gives incumbents an unfair advantage, which suits the parties of government in Ireland who want to do everything to minimise what many people believe will be their inevitable losses in the next election."@en1
