"Mr President, all governments have secret intelligence services so it is hardly surprising that the US gathers intelligence through the National Security Agency, although perhaps a little surprising that it does so from allies, and in particular from EU delegations.
However, the calls for suspension of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) are exaggerated, as all governments allegedly spy on one another. Chinese and Russian spies regularly spy on our embassies and no one is suggesting ending trade relations with them. The correct response is a vigorous démarche by the EU and to beef up security in EU delegations worldwide.
Similarly, I have little sympathy for so-called whistle-blowers like Edward Snowden, who has betrayed the trust of his employers and, more importantly, his own country, the USA, which is perfectly entitled to prosecute him under criminal law.
This is not to say that I do not support reasonable data protection measures and the right to privacy for private citizens. For instance, I do not think it is reasonable that a US citizen should have a right of redress against EU governments abusing his privacy on EU Member State territory, and not the other way round in the USA. Clearly there must be a symmetrical arrangement for all countries."@en1
