"Madam President, we need to be able to give the 112 number the attention and promotion it deserves, and to that end I would like to ask the Commissioner what else could be done. Although in 2011 the European Parliament adopted a resolution on this 112 emergency number which called for greater implementation and promotion of the number, the results have unfortunately been uneven and insufficient as far as you have heard in this Chamber today. It is to be regretted that in a recent Eurobarometer survey just over a quarter of respondents could correctly identify 112 as a number to call anywhere in Europe in case of an emergency. Indeed in my own country, Ireland, just 14% of the population when asked could say that they received any information on the number, despite the expectation that Member States and governments would inform their citizens of its existence. This is one of the worst levels in Europe but many other countries are doing little better. As we approach the holiday season, with millions of Europeans travelling abroad with family members young and old, it is pertinent to remember the importance of 112, which evidently needs more promotion. Now I recently became a 112 champion as I want to play my part in raising awareness but I also share the concerns that were expressed by Ms Hall in her contribution about the importance of equal access to 112 for those who are deaf or hard of hearing."@en1
