"Mr President, thank you to Mr Arias Echeverría, Mr Correia de Campos and our Chair for the debate today. I agreed with Ms Gebhardt’s point on digital inclusion, Ms Schaake’s point about open knowledge and Ms del Castillo Vera’s point about public space. This is why I want to say something about libraries and access to books in an e-format, which is so very important. Currently many libraries in the European Union are being denied access to books in a digital format, because publishers are refusing to provide that format. Knowledge should not come at a price and, after all, we want a knowledge-based economy. So, if we want to prevent the development of a ‘book apartheid’ between those who can afford books and those who cannot, we need coordinated action at European level. We currently have an opportunity to take such action if we want to ensure that libraries have books in an e-format, and this is absolutely critical for Europe’s future."@en1
