"Mr President, I find many of the expressions of shock and outrage by Member State governments quite disingenuous to say the least. We have heard expressions of outrage and calls for the suspension of EU-US trade talks from the Heads of States. Espionage is a trade as old as governments and major EU Member States do it too, targeting other countries to the extent that their resources allow. So not only do EU countries’ cries of outrage ring hollow, they also fly in the face of the subservient and extremely disproportionate responses shown here today. Mr Snowden’s personal courage shed light on US spying methods that EU leaders now decry and, instead of providing even a modicum of assistance to the whistle-blower, they seem to bend over backwards to aid the US in their chase. When faced with the rumours that he might be aboard the Bolivian President’s aircraft, the European countries hindered the passage of a presidential plane, forcing it to land and searching it. This is meek hypocrisy which will certainly not be met with a repentant US Government."@en1
