"Mr President, we talk about rules, procedures and conformity with EU law, yet I do not recall seeing in the Treaties that the European Parliament was to be appointed judge, jury and executioner. I also must have missed the part of the Lisbon Treaty that appointed this Parliament as the moral authority for the whole of Europe. The European Council, the Commission and the European External Action Service have all called for more information and more facts on this situation before they comment. Unfortunately this House seems determined to conduct a witch hunt, aimed at securing headlines instead of finding out the facts and behaving responsibly. The ECR will not sign up to this resolution. We will not support bad lawmaking and we will not condemn the United States or Member States on the basis of allegations yet to be corroborated. It is our responsibility as parliamentarians to have concerns. It is our duty also to make sure Member States comply with the principles of freedom and democracy and checks and balances. Security services should protect not only our lives but also our liberty. However, in a democracy, you think first and act later; you gather facts before you threaten and compromise international agreements. To do otherwise is unacceptable. The Socialists submitted an amendment calling for the freezing of trade negotiations. My group opposes this amendment. With 26 million people unemployed in Europe, it is shameful. The GUE/NGL Group asked the EU to grant asylum to Edward Snowden, a man referred to as a defender of fundamental liberties, and the Green Group suggested he get the Sakharov Prize. What an insult to fighters for freedom like Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi and Guillermo Fariñas, honoured here today! Presumably the Dublin Convention will determine the lucky state that gets Mr Snowden. Let us stop posturing, let us stop trying to grab headlines and let us act in a responsible manner, finding out the facts first."@en1
