"I backed today’s report by a Labour MEP for a fundamental shake-up of the EU banking sector. I support measures set out in the report, which calls for a legislative proposal for structural reform of the EU banking sector, continued reform of the remuneration culture for bankers and the separation of banking services that are essential to the real economy from risky activities of traders and investment bankers. I echo calls for a safer, more stable banking system which does not rely on bailouts by the taxpayer and furthermore I agree that consumers should no longer pay for risks being taken by banks which affect them directly. I am disappointed, but not surprised, that Tory MEPs voted against measures to restructure the banking sector in the EU. This approach is contradictory to what the UK Government is saying at home and shows once again that the Tories are not interested in supporting a fair, stable banking system but rather are happy to take risks for short-term gains."@en1
