"Mr President, relative to other areas of the United Kingdom, my constituency of Northern Ireland has the highest number of road traffic collisions and four people lost their lives on the roads in Northern Ireland last year alone. However, because of a proactive policy pursued by local government, I am pleased to report that the relevant figures are on the way down. Northern Ireland’s road safety strategy to 2020 outlines the key road safety challenges to be addressed over the coming years. Our vision for road safety is to make journeys on Northern Ireland’s roads as safe for all road users as anywhere in the world. It is important to recognise that every accident statistic represents a real person: a life lost or a life affected. Families are devastated and have to endure the consequences of what could have been prevented. Every Member State needs to focus on preventing such unnecessary suffering."@en1
