"When you look at what adopting the euro has inflicted on all those Member States which have adopted the currency, you are left to ponder why any country would want to inflict the consequences of membership upon its economy and upon its citizens. I do fear that, for the good people of Latvia, the end result will be no different as it puts on the economic straightjacket of the single currency. The medicine for this pain is only the resolute determination of EU leaders and the political class in those Member States to stick with the euro against all economic reasoning. Being part of the club is deemed to be worth the high price. As one commentator put it only yesterday, membership of the euro gives ‘a place at the high table of political influence and final release from old enemies and oppressors’. Maybe so, but maybe it simply brings more oppression but in a different form. And it most certainly brings oppression to the people upon whom austerity is foisted as a result. I hope for the people of Latvia this is not the case."@en1
