"Mr President, we heard from President Barroso that the key objective was delivery, so I am asking the Lithuanian Presidency to deliver on one specific objective. We are now close to completing the work of reforming the common fisheries policy, but one key element of that is the requirement that every fishery should have a long-term management plan prepared for it. There is a dispute between the Council and Parliament over the interpretation of the Treaty and how such plans should be prepared. The Council has agreed that an interinstitutional task force should be proposed to settle this dispute, but nothing has yet happened to take this forward.
So I am asking the President-in-Office to take this up with the President of Parliament, to set up this interinstitutional task force and let us move forward. Let us identify the issues, let us negotiate a way forward and let us complete this work before the end of the Lithuanian Presidency. That way, Madam President, you can ensure that a key element of this delivery can be accomplished and we can ensure that there is a better future for Europe’s fish stocks and for its fishermen."@en1
