"Diseases are spread through everyday contact like sneezing, coughing, consumption of contaminated food and water, or contact with animals and insects. The situation worsens as globalisation continues to bring people from around the EU and the world closer together. Economically, these diseases have dire impacts on economic growth, even as they are spurred along by rapid growth and mobility. Evidence now confirms that development funds are most productively spent lifting the burdens of disease because sick people cannot build healthy economies. The time is ripe to strengthen cooperation and coordination between all Member States on preventing the spread of severe human diseases across the borders of Member States and to combat other serious cross-border health threats. I welcome the rapporteur’s report, particularly in regard to making access to vaccines and medication fairer, especially for smaller Member States. Furthermore, I support the extension of the existing coordination mechanism for communicable diseases to include all health threats of biological, chemical, environmental and unknown origin. This will mean the exchange of information on not only communicable diseases but also on other serious cross-border health threats through the early warning and response system, resulting in a coordinated wider approach to health security at EU level."@en1
