"Mr President, this report on the bioeconomy has been much improved compared with what the Commission and the rapporteur were originally aiming for. Nevertheless, I feel that it could still have been a lot better. I am not against the bioeconomy playing a role in fighting climate change per se. It goes without saying that it is essential that we wean ourselves off our dangerous addiction to fossil fuels, but we cannot say a resounding ‘yes’ to it without ensuring that it actually does contribute to lowering our carbon emissions in a sustainable manner. The EU will not be able to meet its biomass demands in the future and will have to look for stocks from elsewhere. This poses a significant risk to the world’s forests and their biodiversity, and it creates a risk of new land grabs. These are issues that I am sure concern us all."@en1
