"Mr President, as has been said, different business models work well in different circumstances and different Member States. In my own country there is a tremendous record and history of successful cooperatives going back to Sir Horace Plunkett over two centuries ago. In my own constituency the Kerry Group – which is now a multi-billion transworld agrifood business – started off as a small cooperative in Listowel. So it is certainly a model worth pursuing, particularly now at a time when we are trying to look at every opportunity to develop the economy and to create jobs and growth.
Regarding the motion for a resolution itself, there was a free vote within my group on paragraph 25, which calls for the transfer of businesses to employees and that it should be supported by a specific EU budget line that also includes financial instruments. Some thought this was a good idea; some thought it was a bad idea. The Fine Gael Members in my group supported it."@en1
