"In the UK alone, marine industries and maritime services contribute GBP 17 billion a year to the UK’s economy – clearly the value and potential of this sector cannot be underestimated. I commend the blue growth initiative for its focus on growth, jobs and competitiveness. The report efficiently identifies the necessary workforce skills required for heightening the success of this developing industry and the proposed measures go far in encouraging employment, while regulating and enhancing the blue economy. However, while this report must be applauded for its powerful promotion of innovation and entrepreneurship, I am extremely apprehensive about the EU-level coordinated and integrated approach to governance which is likely to emerge, should the report’s proposals be implemented. It must be said that while I am undoubtedly in favour of creating sustainable economic growth and employment in the marine and maritime economy, I simply cannot support a report which strives so strongly for a top-down approach."@en1
