"I voted in favour of this regulation, which is part of the roadworthiness package. This report requires Member States to perform additional, on-the-spot roadside checks on large commercial vehicles and sets minimum standards for these checks. The proposals include a risk rating scheme that is based on the current UK scheme. The aim of the roadworthiness package is to harmonise standards and testing regimes across the EU and to contribute to the EU’s target of halving road deaths by 2020. As well as enhancing road safety, improving the roadworthiness of vehicles can help to reduce air pollution levels. In the UK we already have strict rules on testing the roadworthiness of vehicles (the MOT), by harmonising those rules across the EU, this package will mean that British motorists taking their cars abroad can be sure that other drivers are meeting the same standards."@en1
