"Mr President, while there is a clear need to combat fraud and car-related crime across EU borders, I do not believe that the committee’s intention to create national electronic registers containing vehicle registration information is the best way to tackle this problem. Although the premise of information-sharing between Member States is to be welcomed, it is possible that these databases would simply accrue cost, duplicate information and store data in excess of what is needed. I am nonetheless supportive of the proposals that would ensure that vehicles with dangerous defects could be temporarily banned from the roads. This would safeguard road safety.
Critically, however, Amendment 8 of the Committee on Transport and Tourism’s report would compel national authorities to print details of roadworthiness tests on vehicles’ registration certificates. This would cause undue cost and inconvenience to motorists, as certificates may have to be edited every time a car, lorry or van undergoes a new Ministry of Transport (MOT) test or is sold. Such administrative bureaucracy is unacceptable."@en1
