"Mr President, in answering that I would direct the honourable Member to some of the work which has already been done with regard to wing mirrors and side wing mirrors so that the visibility for lorry drivers is improved in respect of vulnerable road users like cyclists. It is very diffficult in an oral question to try and bring everything together in one issue, but there is certainly an issue with vulnerable road users.
However, it has also got to be said that cyclists would do themselves a great favour if, while trying to get there quicker, they stopped moving up along the near side of a lorry when a lorry has stopped and also if they did not use the pavement.
In some respects I would say that ‘God helps him that helps himself’, but that does not take away the fact that there are vulnerable road users – the cyclists – and we should do anything we can do to help them. But of course Members opposite, whose seats are now radically empty, will probably tell you: the cost, the cost, the cost! Well, what is the cost of a life?"@en1
