"Mr President, as shadow rapporteur for my group, I wish specifically to address the registration documents proposal. I welcome this report and I thank Ms[nbsp ]Savisaar and the other shadow rapporteurs for the constructive dialogue leading to an agreement on compromises that should work for the United Kingdom – which, of course, has a system of vehicle testing, taxation and registration different from that of many other EU countries.
I had concerns about the original draft report’s proposal on the mandatory exchange of database information but these have now been addressed, safeguarding national sovereignty over the data that Member States collect and protecting UK citizens’ private details. We can all agree that we want to see an easier and less bureaucratic system of vehicle re-registration across the European Union; however, I am pleased that this directive still allows Member States as much flexibility in implementation as is feasible."@en1
