"This resolution highlights concern at the situation in Turkey, particularly in relation to excessive violence being used by the Turkish police against protestors in Istanbul. I share the view of my political group, which underlines its shock at the use of violent tactics by the police, such as tear gas being fired directly at protestors and causing unnecessary injuries to people taking part in the protest. Furthermore, it appears that some protestors have been denied medical help, which is clearly an unacceptable situation. I support calls by the S&D group to bring people responsible for the deaths of protestors and a policeman to justice and I echo concerns about the deterioration of press freedom in Turkey, such as censorship, which appears to be a growing issue in the Turkish media. I sincerely hope that action is taken by the Council and the High representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security policy to address the escalation of violence seen in recent weeks."@en1
