"Madam President, I want to thank all those colleagues who took part for a very interesting debate and for their support. It is worthwhile remembering that the importance we attach to non-discrimination on all grounds is sadly not reflected when the ACP debates these issues in the Joint Parliamentary Assembly. Often they react as one against these issues, so we do have a huge battle ahead of us to win hearts and minds. However, Commissioner, you are right: that is exactly what we should do. I welcome the input from Ms Striffler in relation to the importance of regional integration and reinforcing the concept of human rights. We also need to look at where oppression comes from, and in a way Mr Goerens was absolutely right: the oppression that we see against minorities in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific is a direct result of colonialism. We introduced these laws and, as I have said to the ACP Ambassadors, I would like to be allowed to go back and take these terrible colonial laws away. As Mr Deva said, we also need to look at trade as a driver for reducing poverty. Mr Paška mentioned the whole issue of transparency in financial transactions. Mr Kaczmarek underlined the universality of the principle of human rights: we did not invent it but we are reinforcing it. Mr Neuser spoke about possibilities for cooperation and about how we have seen climate change and global warming gradually climbing up the political agenda. Ms Gabriel, thank you again for your support and for highlighting the multi-dimensional approach and the role of EPAs in regional integration and how we need to take account of this in the revision for 2020. My dear colleague Mr Ertug talked of sustainable development and poverty reduction and of the importance of addressing tax havens. Let us look at what we need to do in our own countries about things that are preventing sustainable development and poverty reduction, and arguably too about openness and transparency in tax matters. All this is crucial. I thank everyone for their participation. And, Commissioner, once again, I thank you for the positive way that you engage with us in this House and in the Committee on Development."@en1
