"The United Kingdom, quite rightly, opts out of most of the Schengen Agreement which abolishes border controls between participating EU countries and facilitates the free movement of people. The report amends proposals put forward by the Commission for some largely technical adjustments to the regulations. However, it demonstrates commitment to the process of European integration to which I have fundamental objections. It also gives further emphasis to ‘fundamental rights’, obligations to refugees, and the principle of ‘non-refoulement.’ While I attach importance to genuine human rights and providing a safe haven to those under personal threat, I believe the first priority is for a state to discriminate in favour of its own citizens and to have the power to implement border control measures that it considers necessary. This is not a power that should be conferred on the European Commission."@en1
