"I gave my full support to the accounting and transparency package, which will mean that extractive industries will, from now on, need to adhere to new transparency rules. European oil, mining, gas and logging companies will have to disclose payments to governments for access to natural resources. In order to guarantee full transparency, all payments above EUR 100 000 will have to be published and I welcome moves in the report to approve an ‘anti-evasion’ clause to stop companies from splitting payments to avoid having to declare them transparently. The new laws are vital for citizens living in resource-rich Africa, who will now be able to call on governments to make sure revenues paid to them are being used for the best purposes and to the benefit of citizens across Africa. Making payments more transparent will ensure that countries get a fairer deal for their resources and that potential revenue is not lost. Up until now, millions of people who live in resource-rich countries have been living in severe poverty. I hope that this legislation will help all citizens to profit from the natural resources in their country and pull them out of poverty."@en1
