"I am really pleased that this Transparency Report got such a large majority in the Parliament today. It is a strong message from the Parliament that we demand full transparency on payments made to governments by those who are active in the extractive industries, those involved in primary logging, those involved in banking, construction and telecommunications industries. These disclosures should be made on a country-by-country basis and for all issuers active in the extractive and logging industries, disclosures are on a project-by-project basis. We insist that all reports should be publicly available. They would be comprehensive with no exemptions and they would be comparable. This transparency is crucial. It allows civil society and investors access to essential information which firstly allows them to hold governments to account for their activities in the exploitation of the natural resources of their own country. Secondly it helps to ensure that these resources are not used in conflict zones to support one side or the other and finally it allows investors to make informed investment decisions. We have also included a small regime specific to SMEs which will potentially save EURÂ 1.7 billion per year as they are no longer required to report on a quarterly basis. A good decision by the Parliament that very many citizens will support."@en1
