"Mr President, I am really pleased that this transparency report got such a large majority in Parliament today. It is a strong message from Parliament that we demand full transparency on payments that governments make to issuers who are active in the extractive industries, in primary logging and in the banking, construction and telecommunications sectors. These disclosures should be made on a country-by-country basis and, for all those active in the extractive industries and primary logging, on a project-by-project basis. We are also insisting that all reports be publicly available, comprehensive and comparable, and that there are no exemptions. This transparency is crucial because it allows civil society and investors access to essential information which, firstly, allows them to hold governments to account; secondly, helps us to ensure that none of these resources are used in conflict zones to support one side or another; and, finally, allows investors to make informed investment decisions. We have also included a small regime specific to SMEs, which can potentially save them EUR 1.7 billion."@en1
