Through the Europe 2020 Strategy, the European Union has set itself the target of reducing the number of people at risk of poverty or social exclusion by at least 20 million by 2020. The economic and financial crisis, however, is exacerbating poverty and social exclusion across the Union. Almost 120 million Europeans, a rise of six million in two years and nearly one quarter of the total population, were at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2011. Over 40 million suffer from severe material deprivation. One in ten under 60-year-olds live in households with low work intensity."@en1
