"The new Asylum Procedures Directive is a key part of the asylum package which was agreed by MEPs and Member States’ Ministers earlier this year, as an important first step towards a common European asylum system. The recast Asylum Seekers Directive seeks to address deficiencies that have come to light in the 2005 directive. I welcome the new commitments on personal interviews in all cases, better access to information, and the more precise rules on time limits (six months maximum). I also very much welcome the fact that the new directive commits Member States to ensuring that, when considering an asylum application, they must now assess whether the application is in need of special procedural guarantees due to the applicant’s age, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity. In line with Protocol 21 to the EU treaties, Ireland was not automatically covered by the 2005 directive but decided to opt in. Regrettably, that decision has not been repeated in relation to the revised directive. I would strongly urge the Irish Government to give very serious consideration to opting into this new directive so that its enhanced protections apply in Ireland."@en1
