"I supported the rapporteur because curbing illegal fishing, though a difficult task, will ultimately lead to an improved market for EU fishermen and consumers alike. A necessary next step is the identification, naming, and eventual building of a case against those countries involved in illegal fishing. I agree with the rapporteur that ‘the case to identify such countries must be solid, in order for the identification to be legally irrefutable, which takes time and resources’. It is in the interests of all maritime nations to have a properly functioning trading system for the buying and selling of fish. It is also in our environmental interests, as illegal fishing is one of the most dangerous threats to marine biodiversity. The Parliament has adopted numerous reports and resolutions pushing the Commission to pursue the fight against illegal fishing, and this is in that same vein."@en1
