"Mr President, Mr Callanan and his UK Conservative colleagues are determined to paint a picture of a European Union that does not work. But, Mr Callanan, one of your party’s members, Lord Tebbit, once said to people: ‘get on your bikes and look for work’. Would you not welcome the initiative by the German Labour Minister Ursula von der Leyen, who is going to Rome in two days’ time to meet with her counterparts from Spain and France and Italy and advertise the opportunity of work places in Germany, where there are one million jobs vacant, where there are 33 000 vocational training places and where EUR 140 million is being invested in teaching people the German language?
Surely this is precisely the kind of cooperation that we need and a sign that the European Union is indeed working in the way that some in your party would once have recognised that it should?"@en1
