"I would like to focus on the overfishing of mackerel and herring in the North-East Atlantic. We have discussed it here many times but we have made no progress. My understanding is that, as of now, six local companies in the Faroe Islands have applied for foreign factory and processing vessels to operate in those waters. I note the recent announcement by the Commission to adopt a trade sanction measure against the Faroe Islands in respect of Atlanto-Scandian herring, but what about mackerel? How can we distinguish between Atlanto-Scandian herring being overfished and mackerel?
The continued failure by you, Commissioner, to tackle the overfishing of mackerel by both Iceland and the Faroe Islands is inexplicable and astonishing. You have totally ignored the express wishes of this Parliament. We did not give you one yellow card, we gave you a pack of cards and you are not using those cards and you are not taking the necessary steps. Tell us this evening when you are meeting with the Icelandic Minister to try and resolve this issue, as you indicated to us during the trialogue negotiations. If the present trend continues there will be no necessity for further debate in this House because there will be no fish to catch!"@en1
