"Mr President, first of all I would like to thank the rapporteur for his report. It is a welcome opportunity to discuss the ongoing problems posed by illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing wherever it may come from. IUU fishing respects neither fishing boundaries nor international treaties and I welcome this move by the EU to close the loopholes that allow illegal operators to profit from their activities.
This does untold damage to the underwater ecosystems and I know only too well in my own region the problems which they have experienced there and that illegal fishing is destroying life cycles and breeding patterns. Illegal unreported and non-regulated fishing is bad for the industry and bad for the environment. IUU thrives where countries fail to meet their international responsibilities.
The UK has been working with third countries to develop good fishing management and appropriate legal frameworks, and I welcome the move at EU level to encourage global cooperation in this fight against IUU. Countries must do more, and they must take all the action which is required. Of course in all walks of life, as those of us in politics know only too well, we can always do more. It is not enough to pay lip service and while it may be complicated, we must get this right."@en1
